From Child Bride to Ending Child Marriage and Child Prostitution One Voice at a Time

In a remote village in Benue, 15 year old Mary Tembe, a child with a burning zeal to be educated was given off for marriage at the age of 14 years by her mother who believed it was right to give off her young daughter for marriage since she had the same experience and it was a culture in the community. Young Mary fought her mother hard and was adamant and reported to her uncle who intervened and tried to talk her out of it. However, her mother refused, saying it was a culture in the community and the IDP camp where she lived and went on to give her out in marriage. Experiencing a new life in her husband’s house, little Mary could not endure and decided to run away. She went straight to report her predicament to doctors, often called Doctors without borders who worked at the Ukpam IDP camp. As a result, she was referred to a shelter for care and rehabilitation. This event further deepened and helped her to be more courageous. In a bid to help other children like her she went back to her village which was also close to an IDP camp to educate young girls and encourage them to speak up against child marriages and child prostitution. Through her, the shelter got light on the state of young girls in the community and the IDP camp around enabling them to sensitize girls and mothers on the disadvantages and dangers of giving their daughters out in marriage and for prostitution out of poverty and hunger. Not only did she stop there, she also continued to speak up, fight and sensitize other young girls in the community and through her, four (4) cases of child marriage were reported to appropriate authorities and the children have successfully left the marriage. Although, Mary paid a heavy price and is still paying a heavy price for speaking up against child marriage and child prostitution especially with her mother and other women who saw it as an avenue to make money who have shown great resentment towards her and sworn to deal with her. In spite of all these challenges, her voice still remains strong for teenage girls like her in her community. She serves as a beacon of hope, strength, and resilience to other young girls in the community.
